Five members of 1GC|Family Law appeared in the UKSC in the case of Williams v Hackney Council. Judgment in the case was handed down by the UKSC today. Deirdre Fottrell QC and Louise MacLynn appeared on behalf of the appellants (with Christine Cooper of Field Court Chambers). In the judgment Lady Hale gave importance guidance about the use of s.20 accommodation by local authorities and confirmed the importance of providing clear information to parents about their entitlement to withdraw their agreement to the accommodation. The Court also confirmed that when a parent withdraws their agreement the accommodation is no longer lawful. Charles Geekie QC and Sharon Segal appeared on behalf of the Coram Children's Legal Centre and Olivia Magennis appeared on behalf of the Family Rights Group.
