Guidance from the High Court on adjournments in care proceedings during the Covid-19 pandemic

Elisabeth Andrews reviews the judgment in A Local Authority v The Mother and Ors [2020] EWHC 1233 (Fam).

Considering the guidance of the President of the Family Division and the recent decisions concerning adjournments during the coronavirus pandemic, Williams J was faced with a decision on the adjournment of a fact-finding hearing, taking place amidst long-running care proceedings. He was required to determine whether the fact-finding hearing should continue following the conclusion of expert evidence, and if so, in what form, or whether it should be adjourned to allow the lay parties to give evidence in person.
